TESTS: PRACTISING WRITING I

1. You must answer this question. You are interested in science, technology and the future. One day, you see the following advertisement for a new magazine. Read the advertisement carefully and the notes you have made for yourself. Then write a letter to the publisher of the magazine asking for the information covered in your notes.







































Write a letter of between 120 and 150 words in an appropriate style. Do not write any addresses.






Write an answer to one of the questions 2-5 in this part. Write your answer in 120-180 words in an appropriate style.

2. A letter criticising tattoos, earrings and modern hairstyles has provoked a storm of protest in an international student magazine. The magazine has announced that it is looking for articles entitled: 'Personal appearance — a matter of freedom.

3. You see this advertisement in a local newspaper.

Restaurant reviewers needed! Have you been to a restaurant recently? Fancy the idea of a free meal? Send us a review of a restaurant you have visited recently, including your views on the food, service and atmosphere. Say whether you would recommend the restaurant to anyone else. The best reviews will receive a voucher for a meal at a top restaurant!

4. You work for a travel agency that has decided to publish an entertainment guide for tourists. The manager wants you to visit a restaurant and write a report, covering every aspect of it and saying what makes it different from other restaurants.

5. Background reading texts

Answer one of the following two questions based on your reading of one of the set books. Your answer should contain enough detail to make it clear to someone who may not have read the book.

Either (a) A college is going to put on a play based on the book or a short story you have read. They have invited students from other colleges to describe how the most important scene should be performed.
Write a letter, giving your suggestions for the scene you have chosen.

or (b) How well do you think you would get on with the main characters in the book you have read?
Write an essay, saying why you would or wouldn't get on with one of the main characters, and why.
